Stratasys F123 – No Material Detected in Head Fix

Stratasys F123 Series – "No Material Detected In Head" Error

Applies to: Stratasys F120, F170, F190CR, F270, F370

During printing, your Stratasys F123 series printer may pause and display the following error:

No Material Detected In Head

This error means the material has spun out inside the print head and can no longer feed properly into the liquefier. If not handled correctly, this can lead to a material jam or damage to the head.

Warning

⚠️ Important: Do Not Select "Accept"

When this error appears, two options will be displayed: Close and Accept.

  • Do not press "Accept". Continuing the print with no material detected can further jam the liquefier and damage the head.
  • Instead, choose Close and follow the steps below.

🛠 How to Resolve the Error

  1. Press "Close" on the error message.
  2. Go to the Materials menu and select Unload to remove the current spool.
  3. Physically remove the material from the entire material path.
  4. Cut off approximately 6 inches (15 cm) from the end of the material to remove any damaged or bent filament.
  5. Reload the spool back into the machine.
  6. On the Materials menu, select the print head, go to Maintenance > Purge.
  7. Allow the head to purge until filament flows cleanly.
  8. Once purging is successful, resume the print.

💡 If the Material Won’t Load or Purge

If you are unable to load or purge material through the head, you may be facing a partial or full clog. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the oven door and the top cover.
  2. Disconnect the material tube from the head.
  3. On the Materials menu, select the print head, go to Maintenance > Purge.
  4. Try manually feeding a fresh piece of material directly into the head.
  5. You may need to apply gentle pressure to help it feed through.

Note: If the clog cannot be cleared manually, the head may need to be replaced.

✅ Tips to Prevent Head Clogs

  • Perform manual calibrations regularly.
This ensures proper material flow and reduces stress on the head. Follow the steps in the Stratasys F123 Series User Manual.
  • Unload filament when the printer is not in use.
This prevents filament from softening and hardening in the head while idle, which could lead to jams.
