Manual and Auto Focus Adjustment for Epilog Mini/Helix
Follow these steps to set up both the manual and auto focus accurately using anodized aluminum.
- 4×4 piece of anodized aluminum
- Manual Focus Gauge (V-shaped tool)
- #1 Phillips Head Screwdriver
Procedure
- Place a 4×4 piece of anodized aluminum inside the laser machine, aligned with the ruler guide. Turn on the engraver.
- Open your graphics software and set up a 4×4-inch page. Draw a 2×2-inch black-filled box positioned towards the upper left corner (does not have to be flush).
- In the print driver, ensure:
- Piece Size matches the page size.
- Auto Focus is set to Yes.
- Send the job over as a Raster file using Speed 10 and the recommended power setting from the owner’s manual.
- Start the job. While the job is running, press the FOCUS button. Use the UP or DOWN arrows to move the table and locate the brightest burn point.
- Press STOP (do not press RESET).
- Set the manual focus gauge (V-shaped tool) on the carriage. Adjust the table height so the bottom of the gauge just barely touches the aluminum surface.
- If necessary, use a #1 Phillips screwdriver to loosen the two screws on the gauge, adjust its height, and retighten.
- To calibrate the Auto Focus:
- Press STOP and X/Y OFF simultaneously to access the hidden Auto Focus adjustment menu.
- Adjust the number settings:
- More negative = table moves higher.
- More positive = table moves lower.
- Each change of about 40 units adjusts the table by roughly 1/16 inch.
- Press GO to save the settings.
- Rerun the job, press STOP mid-run, and check auto focus using the gauge.
- If adjustment is still needed, repeat Auto Focus calibration until the gauge barely touches the aluminum surface.
Important Notes
- Ensure materials and focus gauge are clean for accurate adjustments.
