17000 (Maker Edge Pro) - Testing Motors During Startup

This article outlines the steps for testing the motors during the startup sequence of the Epilog Fusion 17000 (Maker Edge Pro) Laser system.

Pre-Startup Manual Positioning

Before powering on the machine, manually move the components to the center of their respective axes:

  1. Ensure the machine is powered off.
  2. Grab the gantry and gently move it forward until it’s roughly in the middle of the bed.
  3. Move the lens assembly to the center of the horizontal rail. 
Alert
You may feel slight resistance, but it should move freely.

Power-On Sequence

After positioning the components, turn the machine on. The following events should occur in sequence:

  1. Table Homing: The table will move downward, then rise slowly until it contacts the home sensors located at the lower-right corner of the chassis.
  2. Gantry Homing: The gantry will move toward the back of the machine. Both sides will align by touching their respective home switches, squaring themselves automatically.
  3. Lens Assembly Homing: The lens should then begin moving to the right until it activates the X-axis home switch.
  4. Final Park Position: Once all homing switches have been activated, the gantry will move to its park position in the upper-left corner of the bed, approximately 1 inch from the 0,0 position.

Troubleshooting

If any part of this sequence fails:

  • Note exactly when the failure occurred in the startup process.
  • Record any error messages or unusual behavior.
  • A short video of the failed startup sequence is extremely helpful for troubleshooting—please include this when contacting support.
